When my mom was in labor, doctors thought I might be tangled in the umbilical cord because my heart rate would plummet and then stabilize. I was delivered by emergency C-section, and doctors soon realized that I had congenital heart defects. Still, I thought I'd adjusted well — until my heart stopped on the field. Even when I started breathing on my own, doctors thought I might need to go to a nursing home rather than a rehab facility because I was still so frail. The author's son's arm got stuck in a pool drain. It is not just a summertime issue; water safety is essential 365 days a year. First, pool drains should comply with drain safety laws, which we helped enact after Zachary's death. Finally, a secured pool cover that can withstand the weight of a child is another safety option. In addition to physical barriers around pools, it's vital to equip families with the skills necessary for a lifetime of water safety.

Until that Thursday in August 2022, John Sauer’s most pressing health concern had been his seasonal allergies. She told her daughter to call 911, and the two women struggled to get Sauer, who is very tall and rather bulky, onto the ground to start CPR. She had taught CPR classes, but she had never done it on a real person. Up and down, up and down, her fingers interlocked, hand over hand. Here I am doing chest compressions, she thought, and this CPR is never going to wake him up.

As an emergency doctor, I know that it’s incredibly rare for standard resuscitation protocols including CPR to revive patients brought to the hospital in cardiac arrest. Survival rates after cardiac arrest have hardly improved in decades, so when I heard about these statistics from one program in Minnesota, I was very eager to visit it. Here is what to know about ECPR and its availability. In the E.R., doctors will continue with chest compressions and administer other standard resuscitation measures. When this high-tech treatment is used during cardiac arrest, the intervention is called ECPR.

A toxicology report later showed that Chao had a blood-alcohol concentration of .233, the Blanco County Sheriff's Office said in its report. Chao drowned after friends and rescue workers tried without success to get the 50-year-old shipping executive out of the submerged vehicle. "Chao, who is still on the phone with Keinan, tells Keinan in a [calm] voice her feet are under water," the report said. "Chao told Keinan the water was rising and she was going to die, and said, 'I love you' to Keinan prior to the vehicle going under water." Both deputies entered the pond and tried repeatedly to locate Chao through the back door, "but were unable to," the report said.

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle has agreed to pay $10 million to 50 demonstrators who sued over the police department’s heavy-handed response to racial justice protests in 2020, in a settlement announced by attorneys from both sides Wednesday. The police department — led by then-Chief Carmen Best — used aggressive techniques to disperse the crowds, including flash-bang grenades, foam-tipped projectiles and blast balls that explode and emit pepper gas. A federal judge at one point ordered the department to stop using them against peaceful demonstrators. And when police used them even after Best and then-Mayor Jenny Durkan promised it would stop, the City Council voted unanimously to bar the department from doing so. “This decision was the best financial decision for the City considering risk, cost, and insurance,” Davison said.

Soon medical staff members were performing CPR on her.

YouTube is taking steps to fight against medical misinformation, especially when it comes to finding immediate tips on how to handle an emergency. YouTube users in the U.S. can find videos on 12 topics, including CPR, seizures, choking, bleeding and psychosis. The videos will not contain ads, which means Google -owned YouTube won't make money from them, Graham said. Content moderation has long been a challenge for YouTube, which removes videos if they're found to be in violation of the company's guidelines. Even as the pandemic has subsided, medical misinformation continues to proliferate.

CNN —A 44-year-old American visiting the Bahamas from Boston was killed in a shark attack while paddleboarding near a beach resort Monday, according to local authorities. The incident comes days after a woman was killed in an apparent shark attack at a Mexican resort. Shark attacks, particularly fatal ones, are rare: On average, sharks kill five people per year in unprovoked attacks, CNN previously reported. The odds of getting fatally attacked by one of the carnivorous fish are less than 1 in 4 million, according to the International Shark Attack File. And in 2019, an American woman was also killed while snorkeling in the Bahamas after three different sharks attacked her.
